suffering temporary setback
    Usually I'm writing about all the great new restaurants opening in Port Chester and Rye Brook, most recently focusing on Saltaire and Café Mirage. Unfortunately in recent weeks more eateries have closed than opened, a sad sign for what had been a robust restaurant scene regularly experiencing turnover as every community does.

Port Chester Hall and Patsy's

    On Sept. 12, Port Chester Hall at the train station changed its name to Heartland Black + Gold.
  • I like to keep foodies abreast of what's happening in the local restaurant world-not only what's opened but what has closed and what they can look forward to in the future. In that vein, one coffee shop and restaurant has shut its doors and two other ventures are in the works.

    Many ethnic cuisines are represented by the restaurants doing business in Port Chester and Rye Brook, but surprisingly French, with its long and rich history, is not one of them.

    What makes Port Chester's restaurant scene so rich is the diversity of its ethnic choices. With the smorgasbord of Central and South American folks living in and around the village, the Latino restaurants need only cater to people of the same nationality as the food they are serving to survive.

    In Port Chester, which has been designated "the restaurant capital of Westchester," the eating establishments just keep on coming. One batch hasn't even completed construction before another one crops up.

    This month Valentine's Day is the main culinary happening-and one of the biggest of the year at that. It's a day to share at least dinner with your beloved.

    When I think of Frankie & Louie's, consistency comes to mind-their superb lasagna, savory house salad with gorgonzola cheese, fantastic warm, crunchy bread with sesame seeds, huge portions, reasonable prices and scrumptious homemade desserts.
  • Lolita makes quick change to Rouge in nearby Byram
    After four years, diners can say adios to Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar, located just across the Mill Street Bridge in Byram, and bonjour to Rouge Brasserie and Oyster Bar. As of Nov. 1, Rouge opened at the same 230 Mill St. location as Lolita, the identical spot that had housed That Little Italian Restaurant for many years.
  • Fine American cuisine at CHAR, just across the Byram River
    Char is the fifth restaurant to take up residence at 2 South Water St. (corner of Mill Street), which was for many years Amerigo's and most recently Greenwich Lobster House.
  • All-American tradition continues at Cousin Frankie's USA Grill
    After an electrical fire put Cousin Frankie's USA Grill out of business at its original location, the casual American eatery has since been reestablished in a new one.
  • New Mexican eatery in converted factory serves up quality food at reasonable prices
    In 2000, when Adelo Ramirez opened Tortilleria los Gemelos at 167 Westchester Ave., he said there were only three Mexican restaurants in Port Chester. Now 12 eateries are listed under the "Mexican" heading in this "Dining Out" section, only one of which is situated in Rye Brook, the rest in Port Chester. The newest, Pollos al Carbon los Gemelos at 6 North Pearl St., is Ramirez's latest creation.
  • You can dine al fresco at 43 village restaurants
    In the Northeast, outdoor eating is generally associated with summer, even though when I start gathering information for this section in July, it's often too hot to even consider eating outside.
